Play Store says “This app isn't available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android”
If you tap Install on the PhoneLeash listing in Google Play and see the message “This app isn't available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android”, this article explains why and what to do.
What the message actually means
Despite the wording, this error is about Android's targetSdk requirement, not the age of your phone. Google requires every Play Store app to declare which version of Android it has been tested against (its target SDK). When that target falls more than a year or two behind the Android version running on your phone, Play Store hides the listing as a compatibility precaution.
In short: Google considers the app's targeted Android version too old relative to the Android version on your device. PhoneLeash itself runs fine; the gate is on the Play Store side.
What to try
- Update Google Play Store. Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Settings › About, and tap Update Play Store. An out-of-date Play Store sometimes triggers this error even when the app itself is compatible.
- Clear Play Store cache. Open Settings › Apps › Google Play Store › Storage and tap Clear cache. Reopen Play Store and try installing PhoneLeash again.
- Restart your phone and retry the install. Play Store sometimes caches a stale compatibility decision until the next reboot.
- Check your Android version. Open Settings › About phone › Android version. PhoneLeash supports Android 7 (Nougat) and newer. If your phone is on an older release, the app cannot be installed.
If none of that works
We ship updates regularly to keep PhoneLeash's targetSdk current with Google's requirements. If you are still seeing this error after the steps above, please contact support and include:
- Your phone make and model
- Your Android version (from Settings › About phone)
- The exact text of the error message and a screenshot if possible
