FAQ
How does PhoneLeash forward text messages?
PhoneLeash runs on your phone and monitors incoming SMS, MMS, and RCS messages. When a text arrives, it sends the message content, sender info, and timestamp to our server, which forwards it to your email address or another phone number via SMS. On Android, the app runs as a background service. On iPhone, it uses Apple Shortcuts automation to trigger forwarding.
How long does setup take?
About 2 minutes. Install the app, enter your email or phone number, verify it, and you're done. A setup wizard walks you through each step.
Do I need any technical knowledge?
No. PhoneLeash is designed for anyone. It's a standard app install with a setup wizard that guides you through configuration.
Can I forward texts to another phone instead of email?
Yes. During setup, enter a phone number instead of an email address as your forwarding destination. PhoneLeash will forward incoming texts to that phone number via SMS. The receiving phone doesn't need the app, an internet connection, or even a smartphone — any phone that can receive SMS will work.
Can I reply to forwarded texts remotely?
Yes, on Android. If you forward to email, simply reply to the forwarded email — PhoneLeash extracts your reply and sends it as an SMS from your phone. It even removes email signatures automatically. If you forward to another phone, text your PhoneLeash phone with 'tls' followed by your message to reply to the last sender, or use '@' followed by a phone number to text anyone. Either way, the reply is sent from your original number.
Does PhoneLeash forward MMS, RCS, and picture messages?
Yes, on Android. Pictures and images from MMS and RCS arrive as email attachments. Group messages show all participants. RCS forwarding requires Google Messages as your default messaging app.
Can PhoneLeash forward WhatsApp messages?
Yes, on Android. PhoneLeash can forward both direct and group WhatsApp messages to your email using Android's Notification Listener. This feature is in beta.
What about OTP verification codes?
PhoneLeash auto-detects OTP and verification code messages — whether they arrive as SMS or RCS — and forwards them to your email or another phone. There's even a dedicated OTP-only plan at $0.99/month if that's all you need.
Does PhoneLeash forward call notifications?
On Android, yes. PhoneLeash sends email notifications for incoming, outgoing, and missed calls, including call duration. You can even reply to a missed call notification to send an SMS to the caller.
Can I filter which messages get forwarded?
Yes. PhoneLeash supports keyword filtering — only forward messages containing specific words or phrases. On Android, you can also filter by contact, choosing exactly which senders' messages get forwarded.
Is PhoneLeash free?
PhoneLeash offers a 30-day free trial with all features — no credit card required. After the trial, plans start at $0.99/month for OTP-only forwarding, $4.50/month for personal use (billed annually), or $14.95/month for commercial use with up to 5 licenses.
How does licensing work?
PhoneLeash licenses are tied to your forwarding destination (email address or phone number), not to your device. If you change phones but keep the same email address, your license transfers automatically. Changing your forwarding destination will reset the license.
Is there a plan for businesses?
Yes. The Commercial plan at $14.95/month (or $89.70 semi-annually) includes up to 5 licenses, so you can set up forwarding on multiple devices for your team.
Does my phone need to stay on for forwarding to work?
Yes. Your phone must be powered on with an active cellular connection to receive texts, and an internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to forward them. PhoneLeash runs in the background and auto-starts after reboot.
Does PhoneLeash drain my battery?
PhoneLeash has minimal battery impact. It only activates when a message arrives — it doesn't continuously poll or scan. Be aware that aggressive battery optimization settings can interfere with background operation.
Is PhoneLeash safe? I saw it flagged as malware.
PhoneLeash is safe. Some security apps flag SMS-forwarding apps generically because the forwarding capability could theoretically be misused. PhoneLeash includes anti-spy safeguards: it collects the owner's name and email during setup, making covert installation impractical. PhoneLeash has been on Google Play since 2011 with 500,000+ installs.
