Problems Due to RCS

Read this if some or all of your messages are not getting forwarded by PhoneLeash.

Quick Fix for Samsung Users

Install Google Messages from the Play Store and set it as your default messaging app. PhoneLeash cannot forward RCS messages from Samsung Messages. If you must keep using Samsung Messages, disable RCS in Samsung Messages entirely. After making the change, reboot your phone.

What Is RCS?

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is Android's answer to Apple's iMessage. It enables typing indicators, delivery confirmations, and read receipts.

The catch: third-party apps like PhoneLeash cannot access RCS messages, because there are no public APIs that let an app get triggered when RCS traffic arrives. PhoneLeash only sees regular SMS and MMS.

How to Tell if You Have RCS

You're using RCS if:

  • You see typing indicators from other people.
  • You see Sent, Delivered, or Seen status under your outgoing messages.
  • Google Messages settings show Connected under Chat features.

Note: not every message uses RCS. Both you and the other person need RCS support, so messages from iPhones still arrive as SMS or MMS and get forwarded normally.

Disabling RCS

In Google Messages, open Settings › Chat features and turn Chat off. Google also offers a dedicated form at messages.google.com/disable-chat.
